Once Upon a Carrot is a community-based organization working to solve the obesity crisis by teaching children and their families in our community about nutrition and making balanced and healthy food choices.
In public schools, as part of the USDA Chefs Move to School Program, we offer an experiential food and nutrition education curriculum. Lessons enliven the senses by incorporating fruits and vegetables in every class. We encourage our participants to eat clean, local and nutrient-dense foods. Our programs are also aligned with the International Baccalaureate curriculum as we include food origins, cultures and recipes from around the world.
In our community, we partner with other non-profit organizations to offer programs to adults and children, alike. Our programs are currently in three modules: Grow it. Cook it. Eat it. Our Move it. module will be available starting January 2012. Our goal is to complete the cycle of healthy living with growing food, preparing healthy foods, purchasing local foods, eating as a community and exercise.
Currently we offer the following educational programs:
- Beginner and youth gardening programs
- After school enrichment programs: gardening and cooking clubs
- Teacher Development and PTA workshops
- Evening and weekend cooking classes for parents and kids
- Wellness programs for local organizations
- Farmer’s Markets for fundraisers
